OP 101: How to Use OnePitch

Understand the process behind using OnePitch step-by-step.

Hey there! Let's get started.

How does OnePitch work? What does it help me do? Is there a learning curve? All of these are valid questions that you might be asking yourself if you're reading this page and that's OKAY. We do things a bit differently than what you're normally used to but we promise you'll be up to speed in no time!

This guide will help you understand the basics of the platform from creating pitches to building and managing media lists, to sending your pitches to real journalists and tracking the performance of them.

This the standard process that the majority of PR pros follow when they're executing campaigns on behalf of clients or for their brand.

Overview

OnePitch serves three main functions: to help you craft pitches, grow and manage your media lists, and connect you with journalists.

Watch a brief video overview.

Creating Pitches

Whether it's your actual first step or one down the line, a core component of OnePitch (duh!) revolves around creating pitches that not only catch the attention of journalists but can help you target them more effectively as well.

There are three ways you can create a pitch and generate a media list for it. Those ways are:

  • Text: best for copying and pasting an existing pitch
  • Form: write your pitch in bulleted form
  • Upload: attach a press release, one-pager, or any word doc

If you're looking for tips on how to actually create a pitch, you check out the Pitch Examples page with usable prompts for various pitch types. It's also important to note that a strong pitch includes the following:

  1. A clear & concise subject line
  2. Call to action
  3. Link(s) to supporting details
  4. Between 200-500 words

Building Lists

There are three unique ways that you can build lists on OnePitch: submitting pitches, searching for journalists or articles, or searching for Similar Journalists. Each of these features was uniquely designed with a different approach to researching and building lists. Let's break down each one a bit further.

Submit pitch

  • Upload your pitch (or press release) to generate a list of 100 journalists recommendations. These recommendations are based around the contents of your pitch and the articles written by journalists who are recommended.

Search Journalists & Articles

  • Enter a keyword(s) to search through journalist's name, title, bio/description, outlet, and location
  • Enter a keyword(s) to browse through articles related to your client, company, or news

Similar Journalists

  • Type the name of a journalist to generate a list of 10 other journalist recommendations. These recommendations are based around the articles of the journalist being searched and the articles written by the journalists who are recommended.

NEW! Import Journalists

  • Upload up to 500 journalists at once and manage all of your lists in one place!

Managing Lists

After you've uploaded or created your first list in OnePitch, and before you start your outreach, it's good practice to do a once over of all the journalists you've added. Equally so, it's important to revisit your lists from time to time as part of the relationship building process.

Some examples of different ways you can manage your lists on and off of OnePitch include:

  • Reviewing past articles (see profile page)
  • Reviewing past outreach (see activity timeline)
  • Following them on social (see profile page)
  • Reviewing recent social posts
  • Noting any updates or points of interest (see activity timeline)

Sending Emails

Email is the #1 preferred method of communication for nearly ALL journalists, and in seconds you can connect your email and add your signature on OnePitch to provide that personal touch.

You can send emails from the following page:

  • Pitch Scores
  • Search
  • Similar Journalists
  • Lists
  • Emails (for follow-ups)

It's also extremely easy to convert your pitches into an email and schedule them to journalists on a day and time of your choosing on OnePitch, and you can choose to send up to 50 emails to journalists at a time while also being able to personalize and customize each message.

Sending Email Follow-Ups

You may not know but a subtle nudge can usually make all the difference. Reminding journalists about your pitch can mean the difference between a response or crickets.

As a good rule of thumb, if you are sending a follow-up you should always wait at least 48 hours after your first message before contacting the journalist again.

When you're ready to send a follow-up you can head to the Emails page or wait for our reminder 🙂

Reporting

The pitches have been drafted, the list cleaned, and the outreach sent. Now comes the time to gauge whether your efforts worked or whether some adjustments are needed.

When it comes to your email outreach, we have all the metrics you need to understand how your messages landed and whether or not they drove real interest from journalists. You can also monitor email engagement in real-time on the Activity feed located on the Emails page.

Just in case you're unsure about which parts of an email drive what metrics, here's a quick refresher:

  • Subject line = open rate
  • Body of the message = click rate
  • CTA = response rate
