With a 6:1 ratio for publicists to journalists, Beck Bamberger understands the frustrations that accompany this statistic. There are major inefficiencies when it comes to these two groups and she is on a mission to address this problem and create a solution. She wears many hats between her time at OnePitch and BAM Communications, which helps her to bring new ideas and solutions to the table.

To close out the second Q&A interview on OnePitch leaders, Beck is going to be going into detail about OnePitch, her role, day-to-day and how she is directly impacting the democratization between publicists and journalists.

What prompted you to create OnePitch?

The problem of pitching was so obvious and huge to me as both a publicist and as a former journalist. It’s a solution that seems so needed and yet, there was really nothing in the market addressing pitch curation that protected the journalist and secured results for publicists

Run us through your day-to-day.

There is no typical day. If it’s Monday, I have a full line up of calls with my direct reports at BAM and OnePitch. If it is a “tour day” when I’m in SF, LA, or NYC, I’m back to back with in-person meetings with venture capitalists. I typically get up at 5 am every day and like to go to bed before 10 pm, no matter what the day, though (check out a pic of the SD office below!).


What motivates you to come to work each day?

It depends on the day. Sometimes I get a big kick out of building something from nothing, something that was just an idea in my mind.

What is your favorite part of OnePitch?

When a publicist connects with a journalist, that makes my day. That’s the whole reason we created OnePitch: so journalists and publicists could connect more efficiently.

How are you impacting the democratization between publicists and journalists?

Everyone can drop into a journalist’s inbox, but not every email is opened by a journalist. In fact, most journalists delete emails from publicists’ names they don’t recognize. So how does someone who doesn’t have a relationship with a journalist breakthrough? This is what OnePitch solves. As a journalist, you know that when you open your daily email from OnePitch, all the pitches within it will match exactly the topics and industries you’ve selected so you’re less concerned from whom the pitches come from because OnePitch has already optimized the pitches exactly to your preferences.
