Michael “Mike” Melvin is our next leader of the OnePitch team that we are sitting down with and getting to know more. He is a West Coast transplant from Philly with a background and passion for art, graphic design, photography, web development, and marketing. He is the Chief Marketing Officer at OnePitch and also spends half of his time leading BAM Communications creative team.

He has an eye for good design, good technology, and good people to surround him. Read more about his childhood, passion for photography, and Philly roots below.

Although you are now in San Diego, you were not born here. Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Philadelphia and loved it. I think growing up in such a big city leads to me being so independent and curious.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

My appreciation for art started when I was younger. I was fortunate enough to have parents who actively supported my wanting to take classes that helped me grow my skill set. I spent a lot of time during the weekend at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts where I took painting, sculpture and drawing courses.

We have seen your work and you are an incredible photographer! What prompted you to get into that?

What prompted me to get into photography was just all of my appreciation for art and architecture and living in such a big city. I spent a lot of time when I was a kid sightseeing and going around the city doing still-life sketches of people walking down the street and uh, the various different architectural spaces. Once I started to learn more about how photographers use their tools to capture landscape and cityscapes, I wanted to really dive in and learn more about how I can also do the same.

You are also learning Mandarin! What is the background here? How is that going?

My wife is from Taiwan so I think it’s really important I’m able to fluently communicate with her and her family in their native language. I take classes and have many many apps on my phone that help me learn at least a few new words each day. I’m hoping to be fluent within the next 5 years.

Describe yourself in three words.

Adaptive, driven and curious.

Stay tuned for next week’s interview with Mike, which dives into his college days, career achievements, and previous career predictions. In the meantime, check out our Co-Founder, Beck Bamberger’s, full interview series here.
