The year is 2018 and the relationship era is upon us. Thanks to the digital revolution, the ways we form relationships in our personal and professional lives has dramatically transformed.

Whether it be a quick exchange with a coworker in the office or a Skype conference call with a potential new client, every single interaction counts. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to foster strong connections, but it does require time and “strategy.”

A touch of communication, a dab of authenticity and a hint of trust will have you well on your way to establishing deeper connections with those who matter to you or your brand. Here are 5 tips for building strong media relationships in 2019:

Know Them Like A Client

In order to build a relationship, you need to start with a strong foundation. Know who the right reporters are for your client or brand, and know them like you know your client or brand. Research their articles, social media profiles, and look for personal websites. Think about the steps you take to learn about a new client and apply them here.

Speak Their Language

We’ve talked about doing your homework above and in previous posts, and it’s more important now than ever before. It’s equally important to take the time to learn about the space you’re working in and the jargon used. For example, what are key terms used within AI, blockchain, or smart home space?

Interact On Social Media

It’s called “social” media for a reason. Join the conversation with your reporters by responding, liking, and retweeting their posts. Jesse Ghiorzi explained in a recent blog sharing a story (on social media), “..can often put you on a reporter’s radar and shows that you’re reading their content.” Not only does your name become more familiar, but it also shows you’re following along with the journalist’s work and gives their article an added boost of exposure.

Provide Value In Simple Ways

Taking a spin on a Quid Pro Quo, show the reporter that you care about them and their success, and know a thing or two about their interests. For example, maybe you can offer helpful suggestions on where to stay, where to eat, or what to see to get a conversation started.

I recently sent a list of things to do, places to visit, and restaurants to try in San Diego, CA to a fellow reporter who was visiting for a conference. They loved it and very much appreciated the kind gesture!

Show Your Appreciation

Journalists have a hard job, and a little appreciation can go a long way. If they posted an article, a simple retweet can gain more attention to their article. Give personal examples of how it has helped or impacted your life in one or two short sentences. Keeping it simple and providing a little praise is the BEST approach to start with.
